Lauren Bence
Lauren began volunteering with children on the autism spectrum during high school, at a program for preschool children with autism in New Jersey. She continued her volunteer work during college at Cornell University, working with adults with Intellectual and Developmental disabilities through the Ithaca-area Best Buddies program. After graduating she worked as a clinical research assistant at the Lab for The Biology of Addictive Diseases at Rockefeller University, in New York City. She then continued her studies at SUNY Buffalo Medical School, graduating in 2009 with an MD.
After medical school, Lauren moved to Chicago for a residency in Emergency Medicine, at the University of Chicago. After completing her residency in 2012, Lauren and her husband Brent (a Marin native), welcomed their first child, Brady. Early in his development, Brady was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder, and then at age 3, he was diagnosed with ASD. After continued regression, further testing revealed a rare genetic disorder called PTEN Hamartoma Syndrome (a hereditary cancer syndrome) which also causes his ASD. In 2019, they left Chicago for Marin (Kentfield). Lauren was thrilled to discover such a strong, welcoming support system for special needs families in Marin, and she was honored to join this exceptional group of women, and join the DSE Executive Board in 2021. She is now working as a physician at a family medicine practice in Mill Valley. You can also find Lauren running the trails on Mt. Tam or China camp, doing yoga, and spending time with her husband Brent and three children – Brady, Gemma and Jonah (born Peak Covid- 2020).

She and her husband, Matthew, live in Corte Madera with their two boys who share the same birthday, four years apart! Hudson, her eldest, was born with a rare partial chromosomal duplication, causing global developmental delays.
